Oh dear, oh dear that time of year has managed to creep up on us all again and everyone seems to be squirming in their seats over the silly season. The kids are gearing up for school holidays and the jingling sounds of Santa Claus and his reindeer whilst the adults are furiously calculating their budget as to how they will keep the kids entertained and be able to afford all the presents and trimmings that go hand-in-hand with the holidays.
But never fear, Finance One is here! This is your go-to guide on how to last minute save on all those Christmas presents you didn’t realise you needed to buy whilst still keeping up to date with all your other expenses.
Bargains. Bargains Everywhere
Retail workers seem to love to question your purchases. “What’s this for?” “Just picking up a few Christmas presents?” “Have you started present shopping?”. It has basically been drilled into them to bring out the holiday spirit as soon as November 1 hits.
On the bright side, with November 1 comes savings across the board as shops pre-Christmas sales begin to fire up and those 12-days of sales start. If your kids have a wish list, it’s a great idea to sign up to email lists of the stores most likely to have the presents, so you can keep an eye out for those sales and hit the shops as soon as the inbox starts to fill up.
Online vs Retail
It’s the debate as old as time (or at least as old as online shopping is). It’s always great to support your local businesses, so why not divvy it up? Although online shopping is great for the convenience, it may not necessarily be worth it at times if you factor in the shipping costs. But with a new age of technology comes perks. Google shopping discounts for your brand of choice, and you will be inundated with percentages and free shipping galore.
One downside is the returns policies of online shops which could put you out of pocket with double shipping. It really is a catch-22. Shop around both virtually and in person and you’ll be sure to sniff out a good bargain.
It's Not All About Toys...
For the kids, toys and presents galore is the priority, but for adults it’s the one time a year that the day is completely prioritised by the times you get to eat. In most cases your day is presents, breakfast, nap, lunch, nap, dinner – the only way the holidays should be.
Budgeting for food can be hard because this time of year is filled with the expensive foods like prawns, mangoes, and platter foods, but it’s almost always worth it! A great method to the saving madness may be found in Chrisco! Now it’s a little late for that option (remember it for next year), but if you start putting money away every week for the December 25th feast, you could be in for a food coma or two.
